The Definitive Formula for Commercial 3D Print Pricing

Pricing 3D printed parts based solely on filament cost ($20/spool) is the #1 mistake made by maker businesses and print-on-demand shops. Raw plastic generally accounts for less than 25% of your true Cost of Goods Sold (COGS). To operate a sustainable, profitable 3D printing service on platforms like Etsy, Shopify, or through commercial B2B contract prototyping, you must factor in machine wear, post-processing labor, failure rates, and capital depreciation.

Total Selling Price = (Material + Power + Depreciation + Labor + Failure Buffer) รท (1 - Margin %)

1. Calculating True Material Consumption

Your slicer (Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, Cura, or Lychee) will give you an estimated part weight in grams. However, this weight excludes purge towers, calibration lines, brim skirts, and support material. For reliable calculations, always add a 5% to 15% material waste buffer depending on the geometry:

Material Cost = [Part Weight (g) ร— (1 + Waste Buffer %)] ร— [Spool Price ($) รท Spool Net Weight (g)]

2. Electricity and Power Draw Cost

Modern FDM 3D printers with heated beds draw peak power during the bed warmup phase (300Wโ€“500W) and stabilize around 100W to 150W during active printing. Resin (MSLA) printers consume significantly less (40W to 70W). The formula to calculate energy expense is:

Electricity Cost = [Machine Power (Watts) ร— Print Duration (Hours) รท 1000] ร— kWh Rate ($)

3. Machine Depreciation and Consumables Replacement

Every hour your machine runs degrades brass/hardened steel nozzles, PTFE tubes, timing belts, lead screws, and stepper motors. Resin printers require regular FEP sheet replacements and LCD screen changes every 1,500 to 2,000 printing hours.

Printer Tier Purchase Price Expected Life (Hours) Hourly Depreciation
Entry Desktop FDM (Ender-3, Neptune 4) $250 2,000 hrs $0.125 / hr
CoreXY Prosumer (Bambu P1S/X1C, Prusa MK4) $800 - $1,400 3,500 hrs $0.250 - $0.400 / hr
Commercial Resin MSLA (Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra) $500 1,500 hrs $0.333 / hr

4. Labor and Post-Processing Time

Do not work for free. Even "hands-off" 3D printing requires setup time, file orientation, slicing, bed preparation, part removal, support breakaway, sanding, acetone vapor smoothing, or isopropyl alcohol (IPA) ultrasonic washing and UV curing. At a minimum, allocate 10 to 20 minutes of operator time per print job at your shop's standard hourly rate ($25 to $50/hr).
