Every landing involves some combination of headwind and crosswind. The crosswind component is the portion of the wind blowing perpendicular to the runway — the part that tries to push the aircraft off centerline. Knowing your crosswind component before final approach lets you decide whether to land, divert, or select a different runway. The angle is the difference between the wind direction (where the wind is coming from) and the runway heading. A 30° angle produces a crosswind equal to 50% of the wind speed. A 60° angle produces a crosswind equal to 87% of the wind speed. At 90°, the entire wind is crosswind.
Pilots use a mental shortcut: imagine the runway is at the center of a clock face. If the wind is at a “1 hour” offset (30°), the crosswind is roughly 50% of total wind. At “2 hours” (60°), it is roughly 90%. This mental math helps you evaluate crosswind on short final without a calculator.
Every aircraft has a maximum demonstrated crosswind component published in the POH. This is not a legal limit — it is the value at which the aircraft was tested during certification. Common values:
If your calculated crosswind exceeds the demonstrated value, you are not legally prohibited from landing — but you should have experience and confidence in crosswind techniques.
If the field has parallel runways or intersecting runways, select the one that minimizes crosswind. A 10-knot wind from 280° means only 2 knots of crosswind on Runway 27 (10° offset) but 8.7 knots on Runway 24 (40° offset). Always check which runways are in use — tower may have a preference based on traffic flow.
