How Hard Is the AWS Cloud Practitioner Exam?

Updated August 2026BestHelpTool Certification Team

Honest difficulty rating: 2/5

The AWS Cloud Practitioner is widely considered the easiest certification in tech — easier than CompTIA A+ for most people, and far easier than any other AWS exam. It is a concepts and vocabulary test, not a hands-on technical test. There are no labs, no architecture scenarios, and no service-combination questions.

What actually makes it "hard"

  • Breadth, not depth. Questions touch dozens of services at surface level. You must recognize many service names, even though you never go deep on any one.
  • Wordy scenario questions. Each question sets up a mini-scenario; the correct answer hides in a keyword (e.g., "fully managed," "serverless," "lowest cost").
  • Pricing nuances. The Billing & Pricing domain (12% of the exam) trips up people who memorized services but never learned cost models.
  • Shared responsibility subtleties. Questions love asking who patches, who encrypts, and who is responsible for what.

How long does it take to study?

Realistic ranges reported by candidates: 10–40 hours total. Non-technical beginners at the high end, IT folks at the low end. The sweet spot is 1–2 hours a day for 2–3 weeks.

Pass rate and pass mark

AWS does not publish official pass rates, but community surveys consistently put CLF-C02 pass rates above 80% for people who did any structured prep. The pass mark is 700 on a 100–1000 scale (scaled, not raw — aim for ~75% on practice tests to be safe).

The hardest domain

For most test-takers, it is Billing, Pricing & Support (domain 4) despite being the smallest domain. Remembering which service is free tier, how Consolidated Billing works, what Trusted Advisor flags, and the difference between Support plans requires deliberate memorization.
