How long is it valid?

Your AWS Cloud Practitioner certification is valid for 3 years from the day you pass. AWS automatically tracks the expiry date on your AWS Certification account dashboard and emails you reminders before it lapses.

Your two renewal options

Option 1: Retake the exam (the familiar route)

Re-sit the CLF-C02 exam for $100. Pass again and your new 3-year validity starts from that date. Simple, but it costs money — most people prefer Option 2.

Option 2: Renew for free with recertification credits

AWS lets you renew by completing the free AWS Recertification learning plan on AWS Skill Builder and earning the required number of credits. For Cloud Practitioner you need 30+ credits. Each short course and knowledge check awards credits, so you can hit 30 in a few focused evenings. No exam, no fee.

Step-by-step renewal (credit route)

1. Log in to AWS Training & Certification and confirm your cert's expiry date.
2. Open AWS Skill Builder (free tier) and enroll in the official AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Recertification plan.
3. Complete the courses and assessment checks until your credit total reaches 30+.
4. Your certification dashboard automatically updates — a renewed status typically shows within 24 hours.

What happens if it expires?

If the 3 years lapse without renewal, the certification status flips to expired on your public credential (including LinkedIn and Credly). You lose the right to use the credential logo. Reinstating it means re-taking the full exam at $100 — so mark your calendar and renew before the deadline.
